Lawrence is a city located in northeastern Kansas, United States. The area where Lawrence is located was originally inhabited by the Kaw, Osage, and Pawnee Native American tribes. In the mid-19th century, European-American settlers began to move into the area.

The town of Lawrence was founded in 1854 by anti-slavery settlers, who established it as a center for Free-Staters in the conflict over the expansion of slavery into Kansas Territory. The town was named in honor of Amos A. Lawrence, a prominent Boston abolitionist.

During the Civil War, Lawrence was the site of a notorious raid by Confederate guerrillas in 1863. The raid, led by William Quantrill, resulted in the deaths of over 150 men and boys and the burning of much of the town.

After the war, Lawrence continued to grow as a center for education and culture. The University of Kansas was established in Lawrence in 1865, and the city became a center for the arts and humanities.

In the 20th century, Lawrence continued to thrive as a center for education and culture, and it also became a center for industry, including the manufacturing of aircraft parts during World War II.
